How could it help?

Sometimes in business things can take a turn for the worse, but as a small- or medium-sized enterprise (SME) you may find you lack the expertise to deal with the problem yourself, or the resources to pay a lawyer to handle it.

Business legal expenses insurance could help your business with common legal problems, providing expert legal advice and assistance. These could be issues with employees, suppliers, customers, your premises or your tax accounts.

Business legal expenses insurance could cover your legal costs and expenses – even if your case goes to court – and also give you access to a legal advice helpline.

What will it not cover?

Legal expenses insurance cover will vary between providers, but there are some things that typically it can’t help with. These might be:

  • Issues that started before you bought the policy;
  • Legal costs you pay out before your claim is accepted;
  • Claims where the likelihood of success, or ‘reasonable prospects of success’ are evaluated as being less than 51% at any time;
  • Anything specifically excluded; the relevant policy documentation will set out what is and what is not covered.

*England and Wales only; advice in other jurisdictions is available 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, excluding bank holidays.
